International Women’s Day Message Delivered by Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue on March 8, 2019 (Captain Marvel Screening)
Captain Marvel is about an ordinary woman taking on an extraordinary role to save the universe where many failed. But more than just a super hero fiction, Captain Marvel is about hope, about not giving up even when the chances are slim. When all the odds seem to be against you.
In our lives today – we face obstacles and trials, some appear to be almost insurmountable. We face a lot of fears that paralyze our judgmentt, affect our decisions, hamper our growth as invidividuals, as a community.
At the end of the day, these fears will engulf us, then we begin to slowly accept failure as reality. Or we can take the higher ground, think beyond our fears, examine the possible consequences of our decisions, and then begin to find our strength.
I learned early what life is – the struggle to have a decent education, a decent existence, became part of daily life for me. In the midst of having to think about my ownself, I saw how my life can have more meaning when spent in the service of others. Those who need me, my strength, my talent.
Everyday we face that same challenge, especially women, whether we give in to our fears, our continue to stand for our families, our children, the principles we believe in.
Today, is a time to learn from one of Captain Marvel’s popular qoutes –
Fear is not CHOICE, What you do with it is.
Indeed, we can use our fears to find our strength or cosider them a reason to give up. The choice is up to us.
Sometimes, when I think I made the wrong decision in being a politician instead of pursuing other goals – I always come back tomy senses and remember that it was in politics – that I saw,the Reality of POVERTY. When you walk all the more than 600 puroks of this city, you will face the reality.
It was in politics that I found a more rewarding venue to apply my leadership skills – because the results affect even people you do not know and will never know. The power to change lives comes with the satisfaction of knowing you led a useful life.
It was in politics that my eyes where opened to the advancement of technology in the Information age and where I was truly blessed to meet people from all walks of life.
Thank you so much for being here, for helping in this cause. In this journey. Everyday, I am trying to reach out to as many people financial and material support, no matter how big or small, because this is not my own journey but for our common vision to imprive and better our community. So I thank you immensely for being here.
As Captain Marvel says – I am here not to fight a war. I am here to end a war. Let us unite for Bacolod.
I hope you all enjoy the movie. Good evening.
